falling and rising, went marrying

to drive wishes and paper petitions

into the fire to singe and curl

or onto the water to drift

takes a music wholly without cleverness.

Only desire. Only accompaniment.

Your music is loosed as a pulse of white birds

inside a chest wall.

That sound goes very deep when you’re shaken.

May I use your body too?

I will try it your way

(that famous look of distance)

but how to hold my body

on a morning when a jay

flies so close to my head the air

splits and I hear the gash

or gasp of my own breath.

I will try to stay

beside an absence, sit beside

the opening that is your mouth,

which is older, darker, greener

than the ivy on the sill.

I will try by thinking of the jay,

who for the sake of hunger

dipped down and tipped in

not knowing what it wanted,

who tried and came close

and, last minute, came closer.
